The life of a deputy is an exciting one in that you are in a position to render assistance on a daily basis, and that each day brings on a different call with varying circumstances. As it stands presently anywhere from 2 to 6 uniformed Deputies patrol the county at any given time responding to calls for service relayed through the Caroline County 911 Center.
The Patrol Division places a high emphasis on crime prevention. When not handling a 911 call, deputies patrol the county, constantly taking a proactive approach to law enforcement. Deputies are always attempting to be one step ahead of criminal behavior in an effort to thwart criminal activity.
Deputies perform this task in many ways such as, but not limited to, patrolling known hot spots, and conducting foot patrol in high crime areas. Deputies also consistently conduct business checks to ensure local business employees feel safe, and aware that a police presence is nearby.
Patrol Deputies are also assigned individual zones, which consist of a geographical sector of the county. As a result, the deputy is responsible for conducting foot patrols and traffic enforcement in that area.
Deputies also participate in local neighborhood watch groups, often times attending meetings and/or talking with block captains so that the citizen's concerns can be heard.
Deputies routinely patrol the county always on the look out for violators of Maryland's traffic law. There are many reasons enforcement is a concern such as; preventing accidents causing death or physical injury. It is also well known that many facets of criminal behavior involve the perpetrator utilizing a vehicle; this often times is the suspect's most vulnerable moment.
Examples of this would be subjects that transport illegal drugs, guns, or stolen property. A uniformed deputy never knows what he or she encounter on what most people might think is a routine traffic stop. Deputies are responsible for conducting numerous traffic/speed enforcement assignments throughout the county, some of which may be a surprise to passing motorist, while others may be a targeted area specifically requested by local citizens.
The Caroline County Sheriff's Office’s Uniformed Patrol Division also handles services of outstanding Circuit and District court warrants. Each Patrol Deputy is assigned several newly issued court warrants, at which time the deputy will conduct a short investigative background check of the listed suspect. This effort ensures officer safety due to the fact that many wanted subject’s make an effort not to be located and/or apprehended. This activity can be a dangerous task for deputies due to the fact that many of the warrants issued are for violent offenders who pose a threat to not only law enforcement but citizens in general.
Along with issued warrants deputies also serve additional court orders such as orders of protection. These orders are usually the result of a domestic violence investigation and are issued from the court in an effort to protect a listed victim from harm. Deputies place a high emphasis on serving these orders in a timely fashion due to the domestic situation that is usually present.
